Joel Sutherland For CSCMP Distinguished Service Award

Joel L. Sutherland, Managing Director of Lehigh University’s Center for Value Chain Research will receive the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals’ (CSCMP) 2009 Distinguished Service Award. CSCMP presents the award annually to an individual who has made significant contributions to the art and science of supply chain and logistics management. The award is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon an individual for achievement in these two professions.

Sutherland will be honored during the Keynote Session on September 21, 2009 at CSCMP’s Annual Global Conference in Chicago, Illinois. He is the 44th person to receive the award since it was inaugurated in 1965 as a tribute to John Drury Sheahan, a pioneer logistics consultant and partner in the consulting firm that bore his name.

“Joel Sutherland’s long and distinguished career has been defined by innovation,” said Rick Blasgen, President and CEO of CSCMP. “From his executive beginnings at Denso, where he mastered Toyota Production System/Lean principles, to his visionary leadership in outsourced logistics with CSX and Transplace, to his current role at Lehigh University, Joel has dedicated his career to creating innovative techniques, processes, and solutions to improve supply chain efficiency and effectiveness.

He is also an inspirational leader who believes in leadership by example and has greatly contributed to raising awareness of the supply chain management profession around the world.” Sutherland has over 30 years’ experience as a logistics and supply chain professional, having worked for manufacturers, wholesale distributors, and third party logistics service providers in a variety of industries, including automotive, paper, and pharmaceuticals. He has worked and lived abroad, starting and managing a pan-European 3PL based in Germany for Sealand Services.

In the late 1990s, he was hired as a senior vice president at J.B. Hunt Transport to develop and help execute the creation of a non-asset-based 3PL that would later become Transplace. Most recently, he was the president and COO of Air-Road Express, a logistics company providing ground transportation, warehousing, international freight forwarding, and other services.

Sutherland received his BS degree from the University of Southern California with a focus on logistics and transportation management, and an MBA from Pepperdine University. He has taught logistics at the University of Southern California and is a frequent speaker at professional groups and universities around the world.

He received the Professional Achievement Award from Logistics Management magazine and was recognized as one of the Top 20 Logistics Executives by CLO magazine and the Logistics & Supply Chain Forum. He is a past Board Chair of CSCMP and has served as president of the organization’s Southern California Roundtable.
